Passengers Suffer Food Poisoning After Eating Breakfast On Goa-Mumbai Tejas Express

Tejas Expres, 22120, was en route Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus from Karmali when it had to be halted in between at Chiplun to admit the passengers.

The passengers complained of illness after eating the food served on the premium train Tejas Express. "The train was stopped out of course at Chiplun railway station and treatment was given to passengers by railway doctor", the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) said in an official statement. After couple of hours, more passengers complained of similar symptoms, it said.

About 24 passengers of Goa-Mumbai Tejas Express were on Sunday admitted to hospital after consuming breakfast served by on-board pantry vehicle operator. Sanjay Prabhu, a passenger who also suffered from severe dehydration, said, "We were given breakfast after 9 am and at around 12.30 pm, we were served soup with bread sticks". The Konkan railway officials said that the hospitalised passengers are stable and recuperating at the hospital.

An IRCTC officer and a catering manager were placed under suspension after the incident was reported, a spokesperson said. IRCTC has issued a show cause notice to the contractor.The kitchen where the food was prepared was inspected by area officer at Madgaon after the incident. "Director Catering service is proceeding to Mumbai to follow up the matter". Food samples have been collected for further investigation; in all, 220 meals were served. Meanwhile, two groups of 15 passengers also complained of nausea. When the train arrived in Mumbai at 9.30 pm, numerous other passengers related their ordeal.

According to officials, on learning passengers falling ill after consuming breakfast they were deboarded at Chiplun and rushed to government and private hospitals.
