Employees injured in attempted prison break in Pasquotank Co

At least six people were injured during an attempted prison break at the Pasquotank Correctional Institution Thursday afternoon, officials confirm. But prisons spokesman Keith Acree said officials did several counts after the fire and all 725 inmates were accounted for.

Correctional Officer Justin Smith, 35, was identified as a victim.

Three prison employees remain in critical condition, while seven were treated and released.

"Those who work in our prisons do a hard and demanding job that is critical to our safety". A call was made to the Pasquotank County Sheriff's Office that there was a "possible escape of prisoners" at the Pasquotank Correctional Institute, WAVY-TV reported.

The prison near the northeast North Carolina coast houses almost 900 adult, male felons in both high-security and minimum-custody buildings.

The prison houses 729 inmates, according to the department of public safety. The cause of the injuries is being investigated.
