Trump is'all in for modernization of America's nuclear weapons program according to one person in the July meeting some underground missile command consoles still look like something out of a Cold War movie set

Just hours after one of America's biggest news networks reported Donald Trump wanted a tenfold increase in United States nuclear weapons, he threatened to strip them of their broadcasting licence.

In his tweet earlier in the day Trump raised the possibility of the broadcast licenses of NBC and other networks being challenged.

Trump starred on the NBC reality show "The Apprentice" for several years before making his successful presidential bid in 2016.

NBC reported that Trump "said he wanted what amounted to a almost tenfold increase in the U.S. nuclear arsenal during a gathering this past summer of the nation's highest-ranking national security leaders".

Trump's advisers at the July 20 meeting included Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who were reportedly surprised by Trump's comment. In a February interview with CNN's Jake Tapper, Conway bemoaned "fake news" coverage of the Trump administration and defined it as "presumptive negativity about us".

"Recent reports that the president called for an increase in the U.S. nuclear arsenal are absolutely false", Pentagon chief Jim Mattis said in a statement.

"I think it's fake news", Trump told Forbes.

President Vladimir Putin , who first invited the king to Moscow more than two years ago, hailed the visit as a "landmark event". The S-400 is a very capable missile-defense system, somewhat comparable to the US's MIM-104 Patriot, according to CSIS.

"General Mattis put out a statement, or is putting out a statement, saying that was fake news, that it was just mentioned that way", he said.

The threat provoked widespread anger on social media and elsewhere with many attacking the president for directly challenging the First Amendment, which guarantees the freedom of the press.

It's not the first time Trump has threatened news organizations that are critical of him.

"Fake @NBCNews made up a story that I wanted a "tenfold" increase in our USA nuclear arsenal".

During the race for the White House and again in March, Trump suggested that it might be worth loosening libel laws in order to make it easier for people to challenge inaccurate stories, Bloomberg News reported.

During an address to the United Nations General Assembly in September, Mr Trump declared that the USA would "totally destroy North Korea" if forced to defend itself or its allies.

Only individual broadcast stations are licensed by the Federal Communications Commission, not networks as a whole, according to the federal agency.
