Deal to Protect 'Dreamers' Endangered by Trump's Hard-Line Immigration Plan

U.S. President Donald Trump descends the stairs of Air Force One using an umbrella in a heavy rain as he arrives for a fundraising event

Trump wants the ideas included in any immigration deal, as Congress mulls the future of almost 800,000 young people known as Dreamers brought illegally to the U.S.as children.

The status of almost 800,000 Dreamers was called into question in September when President Donald Trump rescinded the Obama-era program that had protected them, known as DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), giving Congress six months to enact the program into law.

In a statement, Democratic leaders Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-Cali.) and Senator Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), rebuked the list as "anathema to the Dreamers, to the immigrant community and to the vast majority of Americans".

The list the White House submitted to Congress includes the construction of the wall, the employment of 10,000 additional Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers and 1,000 lawyers, as well as the hiring of 370 immigration judges and 300 federal prosecutors.

"These are reasonable proposals that will build on the early success of President Trump's leadership".

"It's an extension of the white supremacist agenda - what they want to do is criminalize and delegitimize Latinos", Gutierrez said in an interview Sunday following Trump's announcement.

The statement goes on to say the border wall had been explicitly ruled out of negotiations regarding DACA. Trump said it was unlikely that illegal migrants and chain migrants would continue to be heavily influenced by American workers and taxpayers.

Last month, Mr Trump told Congress, which is dominated by his Republican party, it had six months to agree new legislation to help the Dreamers.

A White House aide who requested anonymity told The Washington Post that the Trump administration was "not interested in granting a path to citizenship".

But any bill, officials said, must include tougher border protections, restrictions on visa grants, limits on family-based immigration, restrictions on sanctuary cities and a boost in immigration agency personnel.

These demands - including the building of a wall on the southern border and major changes to the legal immigration system - were denounced by Democrat lawmakers, portending a bleak future for the Dreamers, who will not be able to remain in the country legally.

Trump's decision was met with protests, with several Democratic-led states threatening to sue the president.

SHARRY: If the Trump administration doesn't want to get blamed for a government shutdown, they're going to have to include the DREAM Act in the end-of-the-year spending package in order to get enough votes to keep things moving forward.

GEOFF BENNETT, BYLINE: President Trump's apparent DACA deal with top congressional Democrats appears to be derailing. "This proposal fails to represent any attempt at compromise", Pelosi and Schumer added.
