Thousands Mourn Slain Officer As Las Vegas Probe Goes On

The shooting killed at least 58 people and wounded more than 500 people

October 5, 2017: Veronica Hartfield, stands with her son, Ayzayah Hartfield during a candlelight vigil for her husband, Las Vegas police officer Charleston Hartfield.

Off-duty Las Vegas police officer and youth football coach Charleston Hartfield was among those killed during the Las Vegas massacre, two of his friends said.

"The biggest thing that sticks out from him, besides his enormous size, as tough as he was, that man was all love", said Master Sgt. Lemuel Iniguez, a Nevada Army National Guard recruiter who led an Army combatives class with Hartfield for eight years.

"Charlie loved his country and his city", one friend told the crowd.

"Though Officer Hartfield was at the concert as a civilian, he immediately took action to save lives", McMahill said.

In 2003, Hartfield served a year-long deployment with the 82nd Airborne Division in Iraq. Hartfield joined the LVMPD in 2002 where he worked in various departments throughout his career. I kept getting the question, were you good friends with Charles? "He did this for his family", a Metro officer said.

The vigil began with a color guard display and words from a chaplain.

Hartfield was married and had two children.

Both Hartfields were attending the Route 91 Harvest Festival, but only Veronica managed to escape unharmed. She managed to escape the festival grounds unharmed.

Investigators were working on Wednesday to determine Paddock's motives for the deadliest mass shooting in US history.

An officer closed the vigil with the following Calvin Coolidge quote chosen by Officer Hartfield to honor fallen officers, "No person was ever honored for what he received".

One of his fellow officers, Jake Grunwald, has set up a GoFundMe page for Hartfield's family.
