Jacques Dubochet, Joachim Frank, Richard Henderson Win Prestigious Award

LIVE Sweden's Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2017

The work by Jacques Dubochet, Joachim Frank and Richard Henderson makes it possible to image proteins and other molecules after freezing them rapidly to preserve their shape, providing a powerful new tool for medical research.

'I thought the chances of winning a Nobel prize were miniscule, there are so many other innovations and discoveries, ' he said, speaking by phone to reporters at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry was won by three researchers for the development of cryo-electron microscopy - a method of simplifying and improving the imaging of biomolecules.

The Nobel prize in Chemistry was awarded to Jacques Dubochet, Joachim Frank, Michael Henderson on Wednesday.

The recent spike in Zika cases hinted at that new era.

Before cryo-electron microscopy, scientists could only study the dead matter, as electron microscopes' powerful electron beam destroyed biomolecules. "He said "I think they should give it to Jacques Dubochet".

"It's the first time that we can see biological molecules in their natural environment and how they actually work together down to the individual atoms", said Nobel chemistry committee member Heiner Linke.

The electron microscope has been around for a while-there were prototypes as early as 1931-but it had serious limitations for biologists. However, while the electron microscope is good to obtain the atomic structure of, say, a membrane protein, the intense electron beam necessary for high resolution images incinerates biological material.

Honeypreet Insan, adopted 'daughter' of Ram Rahim, likely to surrender today
Panchkula Police Commissioner told ANI on Tuesday they were ready with arrangements on Honeypreet's surrender. Police in India have arrested Honeypreet Insan, the adopted daughter of controversial guru Ram Rahim Singh.

"By solving more and more structures at the atomic level we can answer biological questions, such as how drugs get into cells, that were simply unanswerable a few years ago", Jim Smith, science director at the London-based biomedical research charity Wellcome, said in a statement. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences used the example of the deadly Zika virus to illustrate just how far-reaching their contrubution could be.

It has laid bare never-before-seen details of the tiny protein machines that run all cells.

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry was award for developing cryo-electro microscopy.

Winners of the 2017 Nobel Prize in Chemistry Jacques Dubochet, Joachim Frank and Richard Henderson (from L to R) are shown on a screen at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm, Sweden, on October 4, 2017.

"Soon there are no more secrets", she said.

This year's prize is 9 million SEK (1.1 million USA dollars), and will be shared by the three laureates.

Welcome to day three of the Nobel prize announcements.
