Benjamin Hoskins Paddock, the father of Stephen Paddock, the man identified as the gunman who opened fire on a Las Vegas festival on Sunday, was a well-known bank robber and on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list from 1969 to 1977, CNN reported on Monday.

His father, Benjamin Hoskins Paddock, was a diagnosed psychopath, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and he was convicted of "bank robbery, automobile larceny, and confidence game". Family members said there was no previous indication that Paddock could commit such violent actions, considered to be the worst mass shooting in the country's recent history.

Benjamin Paddock was in and out of prison in IL before heading to Arizona, where he robbed a bank and escaped from prison, landing him on that list.

"I can't even make something up", his bewildered brother, Eric Paddock, told reporters Monday.

Eric Paddock said he knew his brother had a couple of handguns and maybe one long rifle but did not know of any automatic weapons.

Eric said that Benjamin died a few years ago, though public records say he died in 1998.

He previously lived in another Mesquite - the Dallas suburb of Mesquite, Texas - from 2004 to 2012, according to Mesquite, Texas, police Lt. Brian Parrish.

Paddock also had the advantage of time, using multiple weapons and possibly reloading.
