Monarch Airlines has ceased trading and its 300,000 future bookings for flights and holidays have been cancelled, the Civil Aviation Authority in the United Kingdom has said.

The CAA is coordinating the response to the crisis and has said that all Monarch Airline customers who were due to return to the United Kingdom in the next two weeks would be flown home at no extra cost and did not need to cut short their stay.

Monarch Airlines confirmed it has ceased trading following failed negotiations with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

"All future flights and holidays with the Monarch Group are cancelled and customers should not to go to the airport as they will not be able to travel".

He urged affected customer to check their dedicated website, monarch.caa.co.uk, for more advice. Stranded passengers will, however, be provided with new alternative flights.

Britain's Civil Aviation Authority tweeted that it was arranging to have 30 aircraft bring home the stranded passengers scattered from Turkey to Sweden back home, "at no cost to them". "We ask customers to bear with us as we work around the clock to bring everyone home".

Any holiday purchased before the 1st October is covered by an ATOL bond so those who haven't travelled yet will get their money back.

A spokesperson for Swedavia, which operates a number of airports in Sweden including Arlanda, told The Local on Monday morning that they had received no information from the airline about a Monarch Airlines flight scheduled to depart Arlanda for Luton at 11.50am.

The aviation regulator said on Monday morning that the firm had ceased trading with immediate effect following a decision by its board, leaving 110,000 customers overseas and in the region of 300,000 future bookings cancelled.

Monarch employed more than 2,000 staff and was the UK's fifth biggest airline. Secondly customers yet to travel that have booked with Monarch Holidays; our priority will be to get these clients rebooked with another tour operator.

"We haven't had any emails from Monarch or from On The Beach which is who we booked with so apart from the news we wouldn't have known", she said.

The CAA stated all Monarch customers would be able to apply for a refund through the ATOL scheme, which provides refunds to customers in the event of an airline going bust.

If you have to pay for additional costs, for example another night in the hotel, your rights depend on the type of holiday you booked. The company say they are making arrangements for refunds to be processed as soon as possible.
