Ikea buys odd jobs firm Taskrabbit

TaskRabbit Ikea AR

After all, TaskRabbit's website advertises "assembling IKEA furniture" as one of the tasks its workers can perform.

Swedish retail company Ikea said Thursday that it has acquired TaskRabbit. Now Ikea has succumbed to all the synergy: Recode reports that the company has bought TaskRabbit for an undisclosed price, adding the app's legions of temp laborers doing box-packing and yard work to its array of Poängs, Malms, and Lacks.

In addition to the army of what are effectively new customer service associates, TaskRabbit will help Ikea build out its tech capabilities as it wards off competition from Amazon.

"We will be able to learn from TaskRabbit's digital expertise, while also providing IKEA customers additional ways to access flexible and affordable service solutions to meet the needs of today's customer", said Jesper Brodin, president and CEO of IKEA Group, in a press release. The program offers fixed pricing for Ikea customers seeking someone to assemble furniture purchased from Ikea - a famously tricky task. After working as an Uber driver in the second season of the Netflix series, she pivots in season three to become a TaskRabbit "Tasker", one of the startup's freelance workers who helps people with errands and odd jobs.

The dispute escalated Wednesday, culminating with the attack about 30 minutes into a history class. City officials say security will be much tighter on Thursday and metal detectors will be used.

The transaction was signed Monday and is expected to close in October. Once the deal is completed, other countries beyond the USA and United Kingdom, where TaskRabbit now operates, may be added. TaskRabbit will also retain its ability to partner with other retailers outside of Ikea. With Ikea's large footprint - it operates 357 stores in 29 countries - Ikea said the partnership could expand to other countries soon.

Stacy Brown-Philpot, chief executive officer of TaskRabbit Inc., speaks during the annual Milken Institute Global Conference in Beverly Hills, Calif., May 4, 2016.

TaskRabbit operates its unique two-sided marketplace with an overall mission to have a presence in in every city and on every device.
