Thousands attend funeral of slain militant Qayoom Najar in Sopore

Abdul Qayoom Najar, one of the most experienced militants operating in the valley who had rattled the security agencies was killed in an encounter with the Indian troops on Tuesday marking an end to yet another militant infiltration into Jammu and Kashmir.

According to a senior police official, it was a big success for the security forces for the security forces as Najar was wanted for his alleged involvement in more than 50 killings, including that of policemen in Hygam area of Sopore in the state.

A Police spokesman in a statement said the slain terrorist was returning to Kashmir from Pakistan to take command of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen following the "wiping up of Hizbul Mujahideen" from north Kashmir. "Considering that both of his top commanders in north Kashmir and south Kashmir were dead, Najar was sent to take command of Hizbul which has been nearly wiped off from north Kashmir with his (Najar's) killing", SSP Hussain said. "Hizbul Mujahideen has nearly been wiped out from north Kashmir". Three hours later, a mobile tower in the city was attacked, injuring two civilians. He further said that the killed terrorist had exfiltrated to Pakistan in 2015.

A complete shutdown was observed in Sopore, the hometown of Najar, where reports said normal life was completely disrupted. The police added that Najar was involved in the killings of dozens of civilians, police and other security personnel.

Asked how he survived for this long, the officer said, "Najar would keep on changing his appearance and would use wigs and move around meekly". He was already heading a huge network in Sopore, Palhallan and in areas of Bandipora and Baramulla. He was recalled to base camp in Muzaffarabad, POK to sort out the differences. He was arrested in 1992 but later released.

A police spokesperson said Najar was baptized in militancy after killing then HM Chief Commander Abdul Majid Dar in 2003.

Najar joined terror ranks at the age of 16. His group included terrorists from Pattan, Baramulla and Handwara in north Kashmir.
