Excitement bubbles up at BYU as caffeinated soda now on sale

BYU-Idaho isn't following the lead of the Provo campus in allowing the sale of caffeinated soft drinks on campus

It's a new day at Brigham Young University, the Mormon college in Utah: a ban on caffeinated soft drinks has been lifted. Owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the largest religious university in the USA has shunned caffeinated sodas since at least the mid 1950's, the school's director of dining services Dean Wright explained in a rather blunt BYU Q&A.

Mormons are still prohibited from consuming tea or coffee.

BYU's honor code requires that students "abstain from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea, coffee and substance abuse", but does not mention caffeinated sodas.

The caffeine-free policy has been in place for more than 50 years.

BYU alum Karl Jepsen, 48, was visiting his daughter who is now a student and basked in being able to drink "real Diet Coke" from the fountain machine.

"Until more recently, Dining Services rarely received requests for caffeinated soda". Officials said the change is based on student requests, is not financially motivated and does not change the university's exclusive contract with Coca-Cola Co. The university consistently resisted calls for a caffeinated campus, insisting its consumers did not want it.

It will also mark the resumption of aid via United Nations organizations after a hiatus of almost two years. They also limit the amount of refined petroleum sales to the country to two million barrels per year.

"I absolutely love it".

"Caffeinated soft drinks have never been banned from our campus", Jenkins said.

It's not clear how the business will be impacted by the dining service change.

Amber Whiteley said she used to get nasty looks when she brought Mountain Dew to campus when she was a BYU student almost a decade ago.

You can have a Coke and a smile on the campus of Brigham Young University.

BYU has already started selling canned and bottled caffeinated soft drinks on campus (though this is limited to only Coca-cola products). "We created faithful customers out of something that should have been a normal thing, selling caffeine on campus", Monahan said.
