FCA Recalls 500000 Ram Trucks Over Engine Fire Risk

More NAIAS 2017

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV recalled half a million Ram heavy-duty pickups and medium-duty trucks because their water pumps could be defective. The affected vehicles include the 2013-2017 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups, as well as the 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs.

According to FCA's statement, the company is recalling 443,712 medium and heavy duty trucks in the US, 46,220 trucks in Canada, and another 4,485 trucks world-wide. FCA traced the problem to a bad bearing in a water pump that could overheat and trigger the fire.

Through the first eight months of 2017, sales of the truck have increased by 4.6 percent to almost 328,000 vehicles compared with the same period previous year.

The 6.7-liter engine uses one of two different types of water pump.

"Compromised water-pump function may activate a warning light in an affected vehicle's instrument cluster". Of these, he said, "a smaller number involved damage", but the reports did not involve damage beyond "the immediate area of the water pump".

FCA will notify customers directly to advise when servicing will be available. Dealers will inspect the water pumps and replace them if necessary. The company said it is unaware of any accidents or injuries caused by the flaw.
