Red Bull confident victory still in their grasp

Mercedes: 'Singapore will be more a case of damage limitation'

Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen will start fourth with Hamilton, who leads Vettel by just three points in the standings, fifth ahead of his Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas.

It was also his third of the season but he had to put everything on the line when it really mattered to beat the Red Bulls in a close-run session, lighting up the timing screens with a lap of one minute 39.491 seconds.

"It was unbelievable, I'm still full of adrenaline".

"I still believe we can win - I'm still confident we'll get victory", said Ricciardo, who has finished on the podium in the last three straight races in Singapore and came within half a second of victory previous year.

The result left Ricciardo slightly disappointed but the Australian remained confident he could win the race on Sunday.

"During the race it will be hard to pass him so we have to see on the first lap".

"I'm happy that we got the vehicle where it deserved to be and then we can take it from there. It's important that we obviously keep that but I have a lot of faith we can stay there all weekend", he said.

There were few smiles at Mercedes, with the champions arriving in Singapore fearing it would be a tough weekend but secretly hoping for better. I think we can actually do very long stints, that's maybe why the pace was quite slow.

Singapore to continue hosting Formula 1 Grand Prix until 2021
Singapore will remain on the Formula 1 calendar until at least 2021 after a new four-year deal was signed. Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel arrives for practice at the Marina Bay Street Circuit in Singapore this week.

"The drivers extracted everything there was from the auto - we've been quickest in every single session this weekend, and then the one that really counts. we just don't have that last little bit", he reflected.

"You always go for it if there is a gap and if it's possible", Verstappen said.

"Here, what I've seen today, Red Bull is outstanding".

Hamilton, who took a record 69th career pole at Monza by a huge margin, never looked in contention.

But Verstappen was told to return to the pits slowly after reporting that the auto was "shifting by itself" while Red Bull teammate Daniel Ricciardo clipped the wall, forcing him to back out of his final attempt a low-fuel run.

"I think I did just not as much Sebastian", Verstappen conceded.

Nico Hulkenberg is seventh in his Renault and will start alongside the McLaren of Fernando Alonso.

The second McLaren-Honda of Stoffel Vandoorne was ninth, well ahead of 10th-placed Carlos Sainz Jr.
