Harry Dean Stanton Dies: Big-Screen Veteran & 'Big Love' Patriarch Was 91

APNewsBreak: Man burned by caustic beer gets $750K

Stanton died of natural causes at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, his agent, John S. Kelly, told The Associated Press.

He was a favourite of director David Lynch, working with him on films like "Inland Empire", "The Straight Story" and "Wild at Heart", as well as appearing in "Twin Peaks: Fire With Me" in 1992 as Carl Rodd, the owner of the Fat Trout trailer park.

Stanton, who has died at the age of 91, played roles in film greats such as Alien, The Green Mile, Cool Hand Luke and The Godfather.

Stanton has been a staple on the big and small screens for seven decades. "Loads of love to you wherever you are now!".

Stanton's other TV credits included "Alice", "Big Love", "Hotel Room" and "Dead Man's Walk".

Notably, in 1984 Stanton was given a leading role in Wim Wenders' Paris, Texas.

Stanton received no accolades for his role in the film, which makes it one of the more under-appreciated performances of all time-a performance which famed film critic Roger Ebert referred to as a "miracle". He even became the namesake for a popular movie trivia game lovingly called Last Man Stanton on the comedy podcast Doug Loves Movies with Doug Benson. Lynch echoed Cage's impressions of Stanton and said, "The great Harry Dean Stanton has left us. I don't want to deal with any consciousness afterward".

While fringe roles and films were a specialty, he also ended up in the work of numerous 20th century's master auteurs, even Alfred Hitchcock in the director's serial TV show.

The 91-year-old actor became popular through his appearance in several cult and indie films, including Escape From New York, Cockfighter and Two-Lane Blacktop.

Director and actor Samuel West tweeted: "Harry Dean Stanton in PARIS, TEXAS". It was just the beginning of a run in the 1980s when Stanton would take more prominent roles in some staple films of the 1980s.

Stanton, born in Kentucky in 1926, was raised in the Bluegrass State before serving in the Navy in World War II and fighting in the Battle of Okinawa, according to Kentucky Educational Television. He performed in bands under different names - such as Harry Dean Stanton and the Repo Men and also the Harry Dean Stanton Band - and he was friends with Bob Dylan.
