CA Legislature Set to Vote on 'Sanctuary State' Proposal

President Donald Trump did not release his tax returns during the 2016 presidential campaign

- California is one step closer to becoming a so-called Sanctuary State.

The bill approved early Saturday is meant to bolster immigrant protections in the state that are already among the toughest in the nation.

It will now be considered by Gov.

The California Legislature Saturday passed a "sanctuary state" bill to protect immigrants without legal residency in the USA, part of a broader push by Democrats to counter expanded deportation orders under the Trump administration. They've also approved money for legal assistance and college scholarships for people living illegally in the USA, and made it harder for businesses and government agencies to disclose people's immigration status.

"This comes as a relief that there are some legislators that are really listening", said Pablo Alvarado, executive director of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network.

The bill also gives protections to inmates who are immigrants, allowing them to reduce their sentences by completing educational or rehabilitation programs, and ensures that schools, hospitals, libraries, and courthouses remain safe spaces for undocumented immigrants.

"These amendments do not mean to erode the core mission of this measure, which is to protect hardworking families that have contributed greatly to our culture and the economy", he said.

The concessions were sought by Brown, who wields veto power, and law enforcement groups.

Randy Katz, medical director of Memorial Regional's emergency department. "As you know, our state's been devastated", Scott said. Statewide, 64 nursing homes were still waiting Thursday for full power, according to the Florida Health Care Association .

"Given their limited resources, I agree that state and local law enforcement should not be doing the jobs of federal immigration agents", said Bates.

California lawmakers have approved a "sanctuary state" bill that would limit police cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

Illinois' Republican Governor signed a bill last month protecting people from being detained because they are the subject of an immigration-related warrant.

Democratic Senator Mike McGuire, who co-authored the bill, said in a statement that SB 149 restores necessary transparency to presidential elections. The California Police Chiefs Association is now neutral on the bill, but the California State Sheriffs' Association still opposes it.

"The time for political posturing is over, guys", said Assemblyman James Gallagher, R-Yuba City.

Democrats argued that the bill would heighten public safety by building trust between undocumented immigrants and police, encouraging crime victims to come forward.

Among the passages cleared: San Francisco Sen. Immigration and Customs Enforcement disclosed that two weeks ago, before 18-year-old Erick Garcia-Pineda was a murder suspect, the San Francisco Sheriff's Department denied a request to hold him until federal authorities could take him into custody for deportation proceedings. "President Trump's blatant disregard for the tradition of releasing tax returns is unsafe to our democracy", McGuire said in a statement. They've passed legislation and filed lawsuits aimed at protecting immigrants, combating climate change and blocking any future attempt to build a registry of Muslims.
