Kaspersky will speak at the US Congress

On Wednesday, the Department of Homeland Security directed federal agencies and departments to identify any Kaspersky software on their information systems and come up plans to discontinue the use of the software.

For those that aren't familiar, Kaspersky has been one of the firms most commonly associated with researching and securing against common security threats like Wanna Cry and others.

Kaspersky Lab said in a statement that it has no inappropriate ties with any government, and was disappointed with the DHS decision.

"We've had few customers raise concerns, but for those that have, we've offered advice on how to remove Kaspersky from their computers", said Craig VerColen, spokesman for Boston-based software provider LogMeIn, which offers Kaspersky as a complementary perk to small businesses buying its products.

The House Science Committee has announced an upcoming hearing to examine "the risks Kaspersky products pose to USA information systems", in the aftermath of the Department of Homeland Security directing agencies to discontinue use of such cybersecurity products.

The decision by the USA government to stop using Kaspersky Lab products is "regrettable" and delays the prospects of a restoration of bilateral ties, the Russian embassy in the United States said.

The U.S. government accounts for a negligible proportion of Kaspersky's revenues, according to the report, but the U.S. consumer market accounts for about a quarter of the total.

Nicholas Weaver, a computer security researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, called the USA government decision "prudent"; he had argued for such a step in July.

But Mr Kaspersky said the Americans could have full access to his company's activities: "We will open every door, check everything".

"The Department is concerned about the ties between certain Kaspersky officials and Russian intelligence and other government agencies, and requirements under Russian law that allow Russian intelligence agencies to request or compel assistance from Kaspersky and to intercept communications transiting Russian networks", DHS wrote in a statement.

While he described the revenue his firm earns from the U.S. government as "close to zero", the wider U.S. market accounts for about a quarter of Kaspersky's sales.

United States intelligence agencies have concluded that Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a multipronged digital influence operation past year in an attempt to help Donald Trump win the White House, a charge Moscow denies.

Kaspersky labs, one of the world's foremost experts on computer security, is now under scrutiny after suspicions that its software may be used as espionage tools sponsored by the Russian Federation.

But he denied that his company is involved in any Russian spying.

"The goal of this hearing is to conduct oversight of the cybersecurity posture of the federal government, and examine the extent to which the federal government utilizes your company's products", Rep. Darin LaHood (R-Ill.), chairman of the subcommittee on oversight, wrote in the letter to Kaspersky.

The Kremlin has criticized the USA government's latest ban, describing it as unfair competition.
