Gulf Crisis: Arab League meeting turns into words showdown

Gulf crisis continues as false media reports surface

Hours later, the public prosecutor tweeted a section of the kingdom's terrorism law, which states: "Endangering national unity, obstructing the Basic Law of governance or some of its articles, and harming the state's reputation or status are terrorist crimes".

Turkey's presidency announced Sheikh Tamim's trip in a statement on Wednesday but gave no details of the talks, which will coincide with a visit to Ankara by the prime minister of Kuwait, which has sought to mediate in the Gulf Arab dispute.

Arab foreign ministers meet in Cairo, Egypt, September 12, 2017.

A Saudi security source told Reuters the suspects were accused of "espionage activities and having contacts with external entities, including the Muslim Brotherhood", which Riyadh has classified as a terrorist organisation.

The meeting in the Egyptian capital kicked off with a direct rebuke addressed to the Saudi-led quartet by Qatar's Foreign Minister of State Sultan bin Saad al-Muraikhi in a speech, although the Gulf crisis was not on the agenda, Middle East Monitor (MEMO) reports.

Muraikhi further angered Qatar's critics when he said that Iran is an "honorable country" and when he underlined the renewal of ties with the Islamic Republic.

What has infuriated Riyadh most seems to be Qatar's snobbish tone at the negotiating table, and this "insult" by the Qataris made the Saudis suspend any talks with Doha until Qatari officials call for negotiations in a straightforward manner and in line with the requirements of such talks.

The United Arab Emirates, one of the countries boycotting Doha, publicly criticized the move.

But Moody's said tensions in the region were credit negative for all GCC members, with Bahrain, recently voted the most favourable nation in the world among expats, standing to lose the most. "If the Qatari brothers think that if the rapprochement with Iran would serve their interests, they are carrying out matters in a wrong way and they will be accountable for that", he said.

Qatar has denied supporting extremism, saying the crisis is politically motivated. Reacting to it, Qattan said that Qatar would regret its relations with Iran, recalling the Iranian conspiracy against the Gulf states. Qatari foreign minister said on July 31 that the crisis should be solved through diplomacy without touching Qatar's sovereignty and made it clear that Qatar will not accept any demands that are not in line with global law.
