Apple reveals why Face ID failed during iPhone X demo

"Face ID learns your face".

United States Senator Al Franken (D-MN), who is a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Privacy, Technology and the Law sent a letter to the CEO of Apple, Tim Cook, with questions regarding the privacy of the new Face ID feature.

Identical twins may trip up the system, but for them and anyone else averse to using their faces, the iPhone X can still be unlocked using an old-fashioned passcode.

"Substantial questions remain about how Face ID will impact iPhone users' privacy and security, and whether the technology will perform equally well on different groups of people", he wrote. When Craig Federighi took the iPhone, it showed him the Passcode window.

The various iPhone 8 and iPhone X leaks and rumours have been confirmed: the iPhone 7s does not exist.

Like the iPhone 8, it has a glass back, which allows it to also take advantage of wireless charging. The iPhone X will start shipping to India from November 3 and we could only see whether the FaceID is all worth its hype or not.

As the screen now takes up the entire surface area of the phone, the home button has been completely eliminated and with it, the Touch ID fingerprint sensor. Apple has said that the Face ID was more accurate than the Touch ID and it was incredibly fast, all because Apple engineers were using some cool specific technologies such as depth sensing and structured light sensor to enable this new feature. Furthermore, Apple itself could use the data to benefit other sectors of its business, sell it to third parties for surveillance purposes, or receive law enforcement requests to access it facial recognition system - eventual uses that may not be contemplated by Apple customers. As expected, Apple explained the new technology during the keynote and offered those in attendance and viewers streaming the press conference across the globe a demo. As people use the iPhone X in the coming months, there will be more definite answers to these questions. The A11 Bionic chip's neural engine will scan your face to match various parameters.

Everything else out there, that is, until 3 November when the iPhone X emerges to knock it off its pricey perch. iPhone's super flagship almost breaks four figures, going for £999 in the UK. There were plenty of rumours of supply chain delays in the months preceding the device's unveiling, and it looks like they were true. However, it is available for pre-order on 27 October.

White House holds briefing as Trump meets with Democrats
Speaking on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" Wednesday, Manchin says Trump will focus on tax cuts for the middle class. Many Republicans, including fiscal hawks, have been reluctant to embrace the idea of revenue neutrality.

Apple's system appears to solve the technical problems; owners of the iPhone X are supposed to willingly "enroll" their faces from arm's length, turning their heads so facial contours are captured more fully. A 64GB edition is $999 while the 256GB version is $1,149.

When it comes to storage, the iPhone X comes in only two sizes - 64GB and 256GB.

Its Super Retina HD display helps the Face ID feature (more on which below), while it boasts a 2436x1125-pixel resolution at 458 ppi. Just a quick glance at the screen and you're good to go.

So, despite the fact the incident lasted only about 10 seconds, out of a near two hour long presentation, it still has the potential to undermine confidence in the company's claims.

It uses an infrared system to get a three-dimensional image.

It's faster than ever before, too, recording 4K video at 60fps and slo-mo videos in 1080p at 240fps.

Something apparently went wrong when the iPhone X's facial recognition feature was being demonstrated during the September 12 event. The incident was painted as an embarrassing way to introduce what was previously described as wonderful facial recognition technology.

Face ID replaces the previous Touch ID biometric authentication system.
