Anderson seeks place among South Africa sport legends

Spaniard Busta happy to play in Nadal's shadow

That hard work was thrown away as a double-fault handed Anderson a break and a 3-1 lead and, though Carreno Busta saved two set points to hold at 5-2 down in a mammoth service game, he could do nothing to avoid losing the third in the next game.

He will have a chance to win his first U.S. Open title on Sunday when he faces the victor of Friday's second semifinal betwen No. 1 Rafeal Nadal and No. 19 Juan Martin del Potro.

Kevin Anderson, of South Africa, reacts after beating Pablo Carreno Busta, of Spain, during the semifinals of the US Open.

"The unfortunate reality is that the current scheduling and format would require me to make major sacrifices in the way of travel, training, rehabilitation and preparation for major tournaments, like Wimbledon", Anderson explained in a 2015 column on

Anderson known for his big serving hit 22 aces to overpower his higher ranked Spanish opponent. The Spaniard has not been pushed past four sets in the tournament and has dropped just three sets en route to the final.

Golfing compatriots and major winners Charl Schwartzel and Louis Oosthuizen watched him win Friday on the NY hardcourts to reach the brink of a breakthrough win at 31.

"My biggest idol was Pete Sampras growing up and right behind him watching (compatriot and 15-time ATP champion) Wayne Ferreira growing up", Anderson said.

In the first of three posts, Williams wrote: "There are NO words to describe how proud and how happy I am for @Madison_Keys. and @SloaneStephens for making the U.S. open finals".

The No. 28 seed Anderson had been broken only three times in his first 90 service games in the tournament.

The South African had the ideal start to the third set especially when he strolled to a comfortable service hold before earning a 0-40 lead on the return. "I was told I probably needed surgery on my hip", Anderson said.

A 20th ace sealed the set and when Carreno Busta steered a forehand into the tramlines to fall a break down in the fourth, it just left Anderson to serve his way into the final. The result is by far the best of his career, although he did reach the fourth round at both the French Open and Wimbledon this year.

Rafael Nadal and Juan Martin del Potro will meet in one U.S. Open men's semifinal. He had some injuries but was able to back and play the best tennis of his career.

After upsetting Roger Federer in the quarter-final, Del Potro was looking to engineer a repeat of 2009. I have given myself a shot at being in the finals and I will be playing for a grand slam trophy.
