Amanda Nunes Retains Championship Via Split Decision Over Valentina Shevchenko

MMA DFS Playbook: UFC 215

Ultimately, Nunes was able to retain her title by split-decision. She has not really looked overwhelmed in any of her bouts. Still, Nunes has looked awesome in her last two fights. Yahoo Sports had it 48-47 for Nunes. Shevchenko got back to her feet, but it was Nunes going all-in for another takedown, and she got it with less than a minute remaining.

The pair were originally scheduled to meet at UFC 213 in July earlier this year however the fight was scrapped and rescheduled for UFC 215 when Nunes was hospitalised due to illness just hours before the event.

Shevchekno opened up significantly in the second round, throwing and landing some superwoman punches and landing a nice combo at the end of the round.

Nunes has smashed her way to the top of her class over the past 14 months. That marked her sixth straight win, a streak which includes a victory over Shevchenko in their first match past year. She had plenty of energy as the second half of the fight unfolded.

Many boos accompanied the tactical fight, but champ Nunes said her priority was not on delivering a crowd-pleasing fight.

Valentina Shevchenko was irate, and rightly so. The Kyrgyzstani rallied in the second, her output increasing dramatically as the champion invested too much in feints.

Instant Recap, Reaction, Highlights & More From Michigan's 36-14 Win Over Cincinnati
Take away the two touchdowns scored by the MI defense, one late in the fourth quarter, and this game would have been much closer. The eighth-ranked Wolverines are now 2-0 and relied on a heavy presence from its defense for the second straight week.

When the fifth rolled around, we finally saw some takedowns.

In the meantime, he continues to stay ready, training at Auckland's City Kickboxing alongside the likes of UFC lightweight Dan Hooker and world class kickboxer Israel Adesanya.

Round five had a big question coming in: how would the judges score this? Nunes lands a hard straight right hand late.

Round 4. They trade low kicks at the start of the fourth. Nunes connects with a jab and then a straight power punch. However, after an initial flurry, they settled back into their earlier back-and-forth routine of Nunes attacking and Shevchenko launching counter-attacks.

But one one of the two judges gone the other way in an unbelievably close final round, a new champion would have been crowned and it would have been Nunes and her fans who would have been screaming robbery and bloody murder. Then, fans would have been saying Shevchenko hadn't definitively taken it from the champion. It was a close five-round affair that could have gone either way.

She lost a shot at the women's bantamweight title by the thinnest of margins.
