Huawei's Kirin 970 SoC paves way for on-device AI capabilities

Huawei's Kirin 970 is official: high-power, AI-enabled mobile SoC

According to media reports, Huawei's upcoming flagship smartphones "Mate 10" and "Mate 10 Pro" would house "Kirin 970" chipset.

Chinese electronics giant Huawei Technologies Co (華為) on Saturday unveiled its first artificial intelligence (AI)-capable processor in hopes it will rival the dominance of Samsung Electronics Co's Bixby and Apple Inc's Siri.

Huawei said it sees on-device AI and cloud AI complementing one another and spurring the development of new capabilities.

The built-in AI acts similar to that of the virtual assistants of other companies, aiming for a more personalised experience by learning its user's interests and building a better idea of predicting its user's actions. Powered by the newly introduced Kirin 970 processor, the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro will pack a Full-Screen display, corresponding to the bezel-less trend. Gbps Cat.18 modem, a dual-image signal and AI mobile computing architecture, all integrated into a single square centimeter that has 5.5 billion transistors. Chief Executive of Huawei, Richard Yu revealed an upcoming new chip for their smartphones that, the company claims, will outrun the processors used in Apple's and Samsung's now used phones across the globe.

North Korea may have conducted sixth nuclear test
Members of Congress expressed alarm at the North's test and emphasised strengthening United States missile defences. Security Council scheduled an emergency meeting at the request of the U.S., Japan, France, Britain and South Korea.

It is claimed that the Kirin 970 will deliver 25 times better CPU performance and 50 times greater energy efficiency, resulting in longer battery life. Huawei's flagship Kirin 970 mobile AI computing platform features a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU).

The chipset was able to process 2,000 images per minute during a benchmark image recognition test, which Huawei said is faster than other comparable chips on the market. Huawei wants developers to start using it to create apps and software to work with this newfound intelligence. To look after the graphics performance, it got the superior 12-core Mali-G72 GPU.

The Huawei Mate 10 will be revealed in Munich next October 16, and it will usher in a new generation of smartphones that combine cloud and internal AI features.

Huawei's Kirin 970 can power "on-device AI" - the part where your mobile phone can sense and interpret various sensor data. The arrival technologies like the Kirin 970, along with various software enhancements, are majorly expanding AI with more use cases.
