Dispute over tougher sanctions on North Korea deepens

Vladimir Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned Tuesday that the crisis over North Korea's nuclear weapons program risks becoming a "global catastrophe" - but rejected United States calls for additional sanctions as "useless".

"As I told my colleagues yesterday, they will eat grass but will not stop their program as long as they do not feel safe", Putin added.

Russian President Vladimir Putin urged a peaceful resolution of the North Korean nuclear issue Tuesday and made light of calls for tougher sanctions against the North, describing further such economic measures as "the road to nowhere". "Let us see how the situation develops further".

Russian President Vladimir Putin and President Donald Trump's so-called bromance is not on the rocks because there was never romance to begin with, Putin told reporters on Tuesday. However, further United States sanctions on Russia and the U.S. decision to close Russian diplomatic outposts have raised concerns that the two countries remain far apart.

In his earlier telephone conversation with Putin, held one day after the North's latest nuclear provocation, the South Korean leader stressed the need to put in place additional and stronger sanctions against the North that will leave the country with no other choice but to come to the dialogue table.

But some reporters called out Trump , noting that he had not witnessed any "horror or devastation first hand". The storm is now threatening the region near the Texas-Louisiana state line.

The Russian leader also said Tuesday he could sue U.S. authorities over violating Russian property rights.

Russian Federation condemns North Korea's nuclear test as "provocative", Putin told a televised news conference in China.

Russian President Vladimir Putin says that the USA government will face justice for its closure of the Russian consulate in San Francisco and a handful of other diplomatic facilities on US soil. The move was a response to Russia's suspected meddling in the USA presidential election process. "For a start I will order the foreign ministry to go to court", he said. "The American side has stripped Russia of the right to use its property - this is obvious violation of proprietary rights of the Russian side".

Seoul's defense minister said the idea of bringing back USA tactical nukes to South Korea should be "deeply considered" by the allies. There's nothing that can be done about this now, that's apparently the level of political culture of a certain part of the American establishment.

He said the United States was erroneously counting 155 Russian diplomats working at the United Nations headquarters in NY as being Russian diplomats on U.S. soil. "I very much hope that we will be able, as the current United States president has said, to reach some compromise in resolving bilateral and worldwide problems", the Russian president added.
