Plus, they said due to an interagency agreement between Cal Fire and the federal government, the plane could be used to help battle wildfires in places like Yosemite National Park.

The blaze is burning east of the town of Oroville, about 85 miles north of the state capital of Sacramento. Firefighters have had to bulldoze their own way to get to the tough-to-access blaze, and teams hiked in to cut fire lines in an attempt to contain the fire.

The campfire escaped, and Ballenger returned to the area while fire investigators were assessing what caused the blaze, which as of Friday had grown to approximately 3,700 acres and destroyed 20 homes and seven outbuildings.

Three more communities were evacuated, and firefighters struggled to contain the fast-burning flames Wednesday as temperatures surged into triple digits.

The so-called Ponderosa Fire has charred almost 3,600 acres (1,457 hectares), about 85 miles (135 km) north of the state capital of Sacramento, since it broke out on Tuesday, officials said.

Not even the desert is safe from the threat of wildfires across parts of the West where crews are battling wildland blazes in triple-digit heat.

Plus, record rains earlier this year that ended California's historic drought have produced more vegetation, which is fueling the fires.

Cal Fire law enforcement officers arrested John Ballenger, 29, of Oroville, on Tuesday. "A campfire should never be left unattended and must be extinguished completely before everyone leaves".

Elsewhere in California, more than 1,000 firefighters were able to slow the growth of a almost 5-square-mile wildfire (13-square-kilometer) overnight near the town of Oroville, an area already hard-hit by fire and a massive evacuation earlier this year caused by damage to sections of the nation's tallest dam. Cal Fire said the fire was 10 percent contained.

Fires were burning from near Las Vegas at the old nuclear test site to 60 miles (96 kilometers) south of the Canadian border in Montana's Bears Paw Mountains, where five cabins burned and five other structures were destroyed.

Air quality from wildfire smoke is a problem in Montana and OR, where athletic events — from kayaking and half-marathons to high school football games — have been postponed in the outdoors-loving state. The largest fire is only partially contained after lightning ignited it in mid-July. The smoke has obscured the iconic view of Mount Hood and triggered air quality warnings.

Evacuation orders have been lifted at a wildfire on the California-Nevada line but a long stretch of highway is still closed in both directions.

In Glacier National Park, smoke from wildfires has led officials to close the historic Lake McDonald Lodge for the season.

This post has been updated to show that the highway leading to Burning Man has reopened.
