At $169, Nest thinks the Thermostat E is for everyone

CNBC Tech Nest E 2

According to the Nest, the price of a new model, the Thermostat E (E stands for Energy), is only $170, which is $80 lower than the current version. The new Nest Thermostat E is created to appeal to a wider audience thanks to two key changes.

"We believe the Nest Learning Thermostat is unbelievable for the top of customer food chain, versus the more mass-market customer who wants something more approachable that doesn't stand out on the wall as a piece of design - something that just blends in and does its job". Nest claims that the 10-connector Learning Thermostat covers 95 percent of most US households, while the Thermostat E will be compatible with 85%. It'll do that. Out of the box, it comes set to a "Basic" Schedule - one based on an average of the hundreds of thousands of schedules they've "learned" so far. The first Nest Thermostat is evaluated to function with 95 percent of homes. "It's everything our customers have come to know and love from Nest thermostats with a renewed focus on user simplicity and control".

In short, the original line of Nest Thermostats were money-saving gadgets for people who didn't really need to save money. The display shows softly glowing text and graphics, and when off, the frosted display fades into the background.

The original Nest Learning Thermostat is on the left and the new Thermostat E is on the right. Like the Learning Thermostat, the lower-priced device can keep tabs of your habits to learn your schedule through your activities, whether you're home, and if you adjust the temperature manually. The display itself has a resolution of 320 x 320, and there's a layer of polarized glass to diffuse incoming light from the screen. By using smart technology, which eventually teaches the Nest thermostat to predict what temperature setting you'd like your home to be at during different times of the day.

Abbott sends more National Guard troops to help with relief efforts
Meanwhile, in Louisiana, the storm made its second landfall early today as it continues to move eastward. Coast Guard has been called in to help victims of Hurricane Harvey in Houston and other areas of Texas.

Beyond these differences, though, Thermostat E is just as smart and powerful as the $249 model.

Orders for the new Nest Thermostat E should open up on August 31st, with shipments going out on September 1st and hitting retail stores sometime around the 10th. That includes support for Amazon's Alexa and Google's Assistant, though users of Apple's HomeKit platform are still out of luck.

The Thermostat E, meanwhile, is meant to blend in.

The Alphabet-owned company has been working on the new product for the past two years.
