Despite the impending end of summer, the health unit recommends people still take the proper precautions.

Health officials are looking into two potential human cases of the West Nile virus in Simcoe County.

The Bucks County Health Department will conduct an ultra-low volume spray operation on Friday, Sept. 1, to exterminate the breeding habitat of mosquitoes capable of transmitting West Nile virus in Bristol Township.

Mosquitoes are the creatures more often infected with West Nile.

In addition to cash donations, the organization can also use in-kind donations like large plastic or metal bins with lids. On Sunday, the Harlingen Humane Society said they saved 36 animals from a shelter, which was destroyed by the storm.

Mosquitoes spread West Nile by first feeding on infected birds, then pass it on to other birds and mammals, including humans, when they bite.

An adult mosquito is shown in the laboratory at the Middlesex-London Health Unit in Strathroy. Some infected people will experience flu-like symptoms.

"That's partly due to how many mosquitoes have the West Nile Virus and also the conditions", he said.

Health officials say the infection rate is moderate this year.

"It's important for people to be extra cautious and protect themselves against mosquito bites when outdoors this late in the season". In 2006, 4,269 confirmed human WNV cases were reported nationally to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; California reported 278 cases.
