Dara Khosrowshahi remains mum on Uber job, highlights Expedia growth — Interview

Driverless Uber gets driver at last, Expedia's boss Dara Khosrowshahi

Lawyers for Uber Technologies Inc. co-founder Travis Kalanick are facing off before a DE judge with venture capital firm Benchmark, the company's largest shareholder, which is attempting to oust him from the company's board.

Khosrowshahi wasn't known to the public to be among the top candidates for the job.

It also comes after former CEO Travis Kalanick was ousted from the company.

Kalanick still owns about 10% of the company, including so-called "super-voting shares" that give him about 16% of the voting rights of Uber.

For the 14-member, bitterly divided board of directors, which is now running its day-to-day operations, Mr Khosrowshahi is a compromise choice that the dysfunctional yet highly innovative company needs.

But Uber's future became murkier this year when the company was pummelled by scandal after scandal, including sexual harassment accusations in the workplace, a Department of Justice criminal investigation into some of its methods, and an intellectual property dispute with a self-driving auto rival.

The preliminary investigation is the latest in a series of legal wrangles at Uber as the ride-services company waits for its new chief executive to take the reins.

While Uber's business continued to grow, Kalanick's management style faced scrutiny and investors mutinied against him.

United Kingdom not dealing with border issue, claims EU Commission boss
And the news comes as the European Parliament chief claimed that the "EU will not step back one millimetre" from its tough stances.

In comparison, Khosrowshahi's job will be a lot easier: Be charming and commanding, making it clear to Uber's universe that he is ready to be in charge.

Under Uber's previous hard-charging chief executive, Travis Kalanick, Uber expanded to 77 countries in just eight years and built up a reputation for rule-breaking and for a "bro" culture that has been hostile to women and underrepresented minorities.

Dara Khosrowshahi, the chief executive hired to restore confidence in the troubled taxi hailing company Uber, could not be more different to the man he replaces.

Based in Bellevue, Washington, Expedia has travel brands including Hotels.com and Orbitz.

The US Justice Department is investigating whether Uber broke American laws against bribing foreign officials to promote business interests, the company confirmed Tuesday.

"He's adult enough to face the cultural issues at Uber, and he's not stodgy or from a legacy technology company", said Henry Harteveldt, a travel industry analyst at Atmosphere Research who has followed Khosrowshahi's career at Expedia.

Khosrowshahi was raised in Tarrytown, New York, having fled Iran with his family on the eve of the Iranian revolution when he was nine. Joe Sullivan, Uber's chief security officer, said the location-tracking update was unrelated to the executive changes.
