The Box Office Saw Its Worst Weekend In Years

Box Office: 'Hitman's Bodyguard' Barely Beating 'Annabelle: Creation' to Win Slowest Weekend of 2017

The box office made $64 million total this weekend.

Coming in at the top of the list was Samuel L. Jackson-Ryan Reynolds comedy The Hitman's Bodyguard, which earned $10 million during its second weekend.

In second place, "Annabelle: Creation" is tracking for a similarly effective weekend at a mere $8 million for its third frame.

The Hitman's Bodyguard (LGF.A -0.5%, LGF.B -0.5%) prevailed again among film grosses over the weekend, but it lorded over the weakest North American total since 2001.

But not since the aftermath of 9/11 in late September, 2001 have figures dropped quite so low. The biggest debut was something called Leap! which was originally a French animated film released a year ago in Paris and has just a 37% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It earned only $2.5 million.

In second place, Warner Bros. "Leap!" brought in an estimated $5 million in its box-office debut.

This weekend caps off a particularly slow summer box office. If Hollywood wants to take a weekend off from releasing new movies, then that's fine. The Hitman's Bodyguard has now taken in $39.6 million domestically from a $30 million budget, although no global box office data has been released tat this time. "Logan Lucky" will barely have the edge over "Wind River" with almost identical $4 million weekends by end of day Sunday.

Other releases include Wind River ($4.4 million), Birth of the Dragon ($2.5 million) and All Saints ($1.55 million). Exceeding all expectations, the screening grossed $2.59 million ($4,884 PTA), enough to land it at the number eight spot ahead of new release Birth of the Dragon ($2.5 million on 1,618 screens).

The summer box office has been trending down for weeks - this will be the first year since 2006 that the overall total fails to top $4 billion - and the catastrophic weather in Texas due to Hurricane Harvey mixed with Saturday night's Floyd Mayweather-Connor McGregor fight, which Mayweather, could have factored into this weekend's poor returns.
