US Army Black Hawk Goes Down Near Yemen

USA forces in the region rescued five other troops who were on board the aircraft, which came down some 20 miles south of the Yemeni shore at around 7 p.m. local time on Friday.

Five U.S. service members onboard the aircraft were rescued after the crash and one remains missing.

One U.S. service member is missing after a U.S. Black Hawk helicopter crashed off Yemen's coast Friday (Aug. 25).

A USA official told Reuters that the cause of the crash was under investigation.

The U.S. military maintains a small special operations base near Yemen's port of Mukalla to facilitate an ongoing campaign targeting al-Qaida loyalists there.

For more than two years, Yemen's Saudi-backed government forces-with US support and munitions-have been pitted against Iranian-backed Houthi rebels, leading to a devastating humanitarian crisis.

The U.S.is waging a campaign against an arm of the al-Qaida terrorist group that has secured, in the words of U.S. officials, a "heavy" presence in Yemen. The U.S. was also providing midair refueling and overhead reconnaissance support. "Commanders deemed this location appropriate and safe for a routine training event, considering both the operational environment and weather conditions at the time".

The cause of the Black Hawk helicopter's crash is unknown.

Officials are now investigating the crash, which took place almost 20 miles from the southern coast of Yemen, according to U.S. Central Command.

The military is investigating Friday's Black Hawk crash.
