North Korean state media called Trump's rhetoric a "load of nonsense" and announced a plan to launch missiles near the USA territory of Guam and create an "enveloping fire" around the island.

On a tiny island in the western Pacific, about 7,000 USA military personnel and their families are in the middle of the increasingly tense confrontation with North Korea.

US President Donald Trump warned on Friday that the US military was "locked and loaded, should North Korea act unwisely".

Washington could only resort to rhetoric to counter the tirades from the Korean Peninsula, not that we expect it to spell out its own game plan, like perhaps send over four of its ICBMs to the North Korean capital to unmake the day of Kim Jong-un.

Residents of Guam have been issued with advice on what to do if North Korea launches an attack.

There are two major bases on Guam: Andersen Air Force Base in the north and Naval Base Guam in the south. But residents are increasingly anxious over Washington's escalating war of words with North Korea.

"I feel that the presence of the military on Guam will help us a lot", said Virgie Matson, 51, a resident of Dededo, Guam's most populated village.

US and Japanese troops began a joint exercise on the Japanese island of Hokkaido on Thursday. North Korea this week threatened to create an "enveloping fire" around the strategically important Pacific island, located about 2,100 miles to its southeast. They threatened USA, other countries, and they threaten Guam.

The Japan Times reports that Patriot missiles are being placed along the west coast of the country to make good on Japan's promise to intercept any missiles North Korea fires at Guam. Along with a bigger set of manoeuvrs held every spring, the exercises are routinely met by strong condemnation and threats of countermeasures from North Korea. Guam officially became a US territory in 1950 and was put under the administration of the Department of the Navy. Guam stayed under naval rule until 1950, when the Organic Act made Guam a self-governing territory of the USA and its residents became US citizens.

"Japan invaded us, the Spanish invaded us", Genereux says. Their location in a USA territory means its military is just hours from potential flashpoints in the western Pacific. President William McKinley ordered Guam to be ruled by the U.S. Navy.

Resident Isaac Camacho, 19, says he feels Guam's relationship with the USA mainland is "a little misunderstood on their part".

China, however, could be a stumbling block but only if the Philippines continues to press its claim to territories in the South China Sea that are also claimed by Beijing.

The official languages of Guam are English and Chamorro, which means 'noble.' It's a Malayo-Polynesian language that has incorporated Spanish words over time.
