In May, a torch-wielding group that included prominent white nationalist Richard Spencer gathered around the statue for a nighttime protest, and in July, about 50 members of a North Carolina-based KKK group traveled there for a rally, where they were met by hundreds of counterprotesters. The city is progressive and not at all a center of white nationalism.

Police officers who had been keeping a wary eye on the march jumped in and broke up the fights.

David Duke, former Imperial Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, has slammed U.S. President Donald Trump for decrying violent clashes between white nationalists and counter-protesters in Charlottesville, Va., claiming that the so-called "Unite the Right" rally represents Trump's own supporters' vision for the United States.

Footage has emerged of militias arriving in the city ahead of the demonstration and scuffles breaking out between protesters and counter-demonstrators.

"I am deeply saddened and disturbed by the hateful behavior displayed by torch-bearing protesters that marched on our grounds this evening", University of Virginia President Teresa Sullivan said in a statement.

Meanwhile, on Facebook, Charlottesville mayor Mike Signer said he was "disgusted" by the scenes that emerged from the university. When I think of torches, I want to think of the Statue of Liberty. "I want to urge my fellow Virginians who may consider joining either in support or opposition to the planned rally to make alternative plans".

Prior to the actual rally Saturday morning, the mood appeared to be tense in Charlottesville.

He also added, "We will navigate it as delicately as possible and just adhere to whatever wishes [the family] would want". Chester Bennington and his band, Linkin Park, filmed an episode of "Carpool Karaoke: The Series" before he died.

Mayor Michael Signer said he was disgusted that the white nationalists had come to his town and blamed Trump for inflaming racial prejudices with his campaign a year ago. A spokeswoman for the University of Virginia Hospital said it treated 20 patients from the incident, and one had died. "We believe that diversity is an essential element of excellence, and that intolerance and exclusion inhibit progress". However, the alt-right blogger objected to the decision in a federal court saying it was a violation of free speech.

"One may stand up for one's beliefs without physical confrontation".

In its decision to move the rally, city officials cited safety concerns and crown control as contributing factors.

Saturday's rally is expected to attract several thousand, plus a heavy contingent of counter-protesters.

"The views fuelling the spectacle in Charlottesville are repugnant".

Shocking footage shows fighting between dozens of protesters, paint being thrown on them and some of the protesters being pepper-sprayed in the face.

Since Thursday, the Unite the Right rally has been involved in a legal battle regarding the place of this protest.
