AI beats top 'Dota 2' players in one-on-one matches

Dota 2 - OpenAI Blog

The company claims that the AI was able to defeat the humans not because of its actions-per-minute but due to its live grasp of the opponent's strategy and planning accordingly.

Although Dota 2 has had bots for years now, their skill level has always been below what a human player would encounter in public matchmaking.

One of the best players in the world, which is entrusted to the standoff bot, was a Ukrainian nickname Dendi. Each round, the teams choose from a list of roughly 100 characters, called heroes, who each have different strengths, weaknesses and special abilities, with one player controlling one hero each.

Car Smashes Into Protesters in Charlottesville: "This Is War Downtown"
Meanwhile, on Facebook , Charlottesville mayor Mike Signer said he was "disgusted" by the scenes that emerged from the university. Since Thursday, the Unite the Right rally has been involved in a legal battle regarding the place of this protest.

At an e-sports tournament hosted by Valve, OpenAI's bot managed to defeat pro gamer Danylo Ishutin, more commonly known by alias Dendi. OpenAI CTO Greg Brockman said it took two weeks to train the bot, and it had previously beaten the world's top 1v1 player and the overall top-ranked player in the world. The next step, Brockman added, was training the bot to play as five players at once, and take on a full team of professionals. "This guy is really scary", Dendi kept saying, and at one point yelped "Please stop bullying me!" when the bot rushed at him aggressively. In the meantime, the company said it will soon let anybody play against the bot.

As they plan to explore the 5v5 Dota in the future, Elon Musk thanked Microsoft for use of their Azure cloud computing platform as it required massive processing power.

While bots have mastered games like Chess and Go, video games like DOTA 2 are still a challenge, but one that OpenAI seems equal to. It quickly began to implement research projects, see OpenAI Gym Gives Reinforcement Learning A Work Out and a year ago partnered with Microsoft in order to use Azure.
