Spain could overtake Greece in migrant sea arrivals

More than 8,000 migrants have arrived by sea in Spain, nearly as many as the 11,713 who have landed in Greece.

According to Otero, 7,900 people arrived in Andalusia in the first seven months of the year, nearly triple the number of arrivals in the same period in 2016.

Sunbathers on a southern Spanish beach were startled this week when 30 to 40 fully clothed men pulled up to shore in a rubber boat and scattered across the sand.

The numbers have dropped significantly since then, in a large part due to a deal the European Union struck with Turkey to keep migrants there.

So far this year, 8,385 refugees have entered Spain by sea, compared to 2,476 during the same period last year, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said in a statement.

Millman says that it is probable that Spain will take the lead from Greece for having received the most migrants by the end of 2017. The pace has quickened so rapidly in recent months that some experts think the country could overtake Greece in the number of newcomers arriving by boat this year.

Teenage Migrants 'Deliberately Drowned' By Smugglers In Yemen
As per reports, more than 111,000 migrants arrived on the shores of Yemen previous year and in 2015 the figure was 100,000. The migrants usually make the risky journey across the Mediterranean Sea with smugglers, who sometimes overcrowd the boats.

On Wednesday, there also surfaced a video of a boatload of migrants arriving at Los Alemanes beach on the Spanish coastline, some 19 miles from the African coast.

Local reports said most of the men were Moroccan, although video footage taken by tourists appeared to show the majority of the men were sub-Saharan Africans.

She says Germany is willing to increase aid for migrant facilities in Libya and promoting the north African nation's stability, but acknowledges "there's a lot that lies ahead for us".

"People are talking about going to Spain". The passengers, mostly from Morocco and neighboring Algeria, were looking for a better life in Europe and using Spain as a doorway.

Hungarian security chief György Bakondi puts the total number of arrivals in Spain somewhat higher, citing a figure of 9,507 migrants in the first six months of 2017.

Inigo Vila, in charge of emergencies for the Red Cross in Spain, said the organisation had reinforced the number of people working on the coast in southern Andalusia and in Ceuta to help migrants when they make landfall.
