That threat followed reports that North Korea had managed to make a nuclear warhead small enough to fit inside its missiles.

The Japanese city Nagasaki on Wednesday marked the 72nd anniversary of the United States atomic bombing during World War II, with Mayor Tomihisa Taue insisting that Tokyo joins a treaty to ban nuclear weapons.

"It beggars belief that the U.S. president has chosen the 72nd anniversary to threaten North Korea with "fire and fury like the world has never seen".

In his Peace Declaration at a ceremony in the Peace Park to commemorate the lives lost on August 9, 1945, Taue said the government's position on nuclear weapons was "incomprehensible", Xinhua news agency reported. "A strong sense of anxiety is spreading across the globe that in the not too distant future these weapons could actually be used again".

To accelerate Japan's surrender in WWII, the US forces dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki respectively on August 6 and August 9, 1945.

At 11:02am, the time that the bomb struck 72 years ago, people at the ceremony observed a moment of silence as the peace bell rang. But he said "Japan is determined to lead the worldwide community.by continuing to appeal to both sides" - ones with and without nuclear weapons.

"As the only country in the world to have suffered wartime atomic bombings, I urge the Japanese government to reconsider the policy of relying on the nuclear umbrella and join the nuclear prohibition treaty at the earliest possible opportunity", he said.

Nagasaki Mayor Tomihisa Taue (2nd R) and other representatives carry wreaths for the United States atomic bomb victims during a ceremony at the Peace Memorial Park in Nagasaki, Japan, on August 9, 2017.

The outspoken mayor praised the atomic bombing survivors, or "hibakusha", for their lifelong devotion to the effort.

In a speech, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe expressed his commitment to "realizing a world without nuclear weapons".

A list of the names of 3,551 people newly confirmed in the year to July to have died due to the atomic bombing of Nagasaki was dedicated at a memorial, bringing the total death toll to 175,743.
