Paris' prosecutor opened an anti-terrorism probe after a auto rammed into a group of military patrolling in the Paris suburb of Levallois-Perret on Wednesday (Aug 9) morning, his office said in a statement.

A police operation was underway to find the vehicle and the driver involved in the incident, BBC reported.

Shortly after 1am police said a man had been arrested north of the French capital and police were investigating a link between him and the attack.

Four soldiers have been left with minor injuries, while two are seriously hurt.

The officers were on routine patrol as part of Operation Sentinelle, which launched after the Charlie Hebdo attack in January 2015, to protect civilians from terror attacks.

It happened near the Place de Verdun in the Levallois-Perret suburb of the city at around 8am local time.

On Wednesday morning, a BMW positioned itself in a small alley in Levallois-Perret, a Paris suburb, lying in wait.

Today's is the latest of several attacks targeting security forces guarding France over the past year.

"Bomb squads were deployed to the scene and the Paris prosecutor's counter-terrorism unit opened an investigation into what is suspected to be a deliberate act", France24 says.

Balkany claimed that the BMW "had prepositioned itself in the cal-de-sack (where the barracks located) and barrelled into them", adding that "the vehicle had accelerated very quickly". 'It's an odious act of aggression, ' Balkany also said.

One eyewitness, who gave her name as Zakia, told BFMTV that she was awakened by a "boom" before running to her balcony.

"I heard a loud sound, shouts".

In April, a policeman was shot dead on the Champs-Elysees by a man with a long criminal record, who investigators determined was acting from terrorist motives. Police described the incident as an "apparently deliberate act".

"A police investigation was launched and we are searching for the auto", the local police department said in a statement immediately following the attack.

The soldiers who came under attack Wednesday are part of France's Operation Sentinel, which for the past two years has integrated the military into public security operations. Last weekend, a teenager with a knife shouting "Allahu akbar" attempted to force his way into the Eiffel Tower.
