Amazon makes an investment in the Essential Phone

Amazon just backed the smartphone company created by the founder of Android

It turns out that the Amazon Alexa Fund and China-based Tencent Holdings have contributed the $300 million package. In addition to revealing its investors, Essential also announced where the phone will be available to purchase.

"For all the good Android has done to help bring technology to almost everyone it has also helped create this weird new world where people are forced to fight with the very technology that was supposed to simplify their lives", wrote Rubin.

After two months of delays, the Essential Phone still doesn't have a final release date pinned down.

With executives headed out the glass door, Andy Rubin's Essential is hurting in morale.

In May, Android co-founder Andy Rubin unveiled his latest endeavor, the Essential PH-1, a smartphone with a near bezel-less display and the ability to accept accessories, such as a 360-degree camera, via its unique pogo pins.

Above-Average Activity Predicted for 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season
ENSO is now in a neutral phase, which means the Atlantic Basin is not being impacted in a way to prevent tropical development. Tropical Storm Franklin is the latest, forecast to make landfall in Mexico overnight Wednesday into Thursday as a hurricane.

Andy Rubin and his company clearly want to disrupt the duopolistic United States smartphone market, which is now dominated by two companies: Apple and Samsung.

Are you waiting for your Essential Phone to arrive?

A few weeks ago, Essential said that the Essential Phone would be released in a few weeks. Rubin, Essential's founder and CEO, has said Essential Home will be created to interact with various smart home ecosystems and will allow owners to use Amazon's Alexa virtual assistant to control their device.

"Essential Products has a compelling vision and roadmap for connected devices that integrates voice technology in novel ways", Paul Bernard, director of corporate development for the Alexa Fund, said in a statement. The phone will also be available through Sprint in the U.S. and Telus in Canada.

Other investors listed on the company's site include Redpoint, Playground, Access Technology Ventures, VY Vapital, Altimeter Capital and Foxconn.
