US President Donald Trump on Tuesday warned North Korea it would be met with "fire and fury" if it threatens the United States. At a briefing on August 8, Trump said that any further threats from the North Koreans would be met with "fire and fury".

"And as I said they will be met with fire, fury and frankly, power... the likes of which this world has never been seen before".

North Korea has produced a nuclear warhead small enough to fit inside its missiles, the Washington Post reported today, a major development sure to further inflame tensions.

Trump's statement comes just three days after the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) unanimously voted to impose a new round of sanctions on Pyongyang in response to its latest ballistic missile tests.

Trump's national security adviser, H.R. McMaster, said over the weekend that "all options" are on the table to deal with North Korea. Significantly, the sanctions were supported by China, which accounts for more than 90% of North Korea's external commerce.

Separately, Japan's defense ministry assessed in a report on Tuesday that it is possible that North Korea has achieved the miniaturization of nuclear weapons and has developed nuclear warheads. North Korea claimed to have tested the smaller design a year ago, but that has not been confirmed.

North Korea's foreign minister Ri Yong Ho said Seoul's proposals lack sincerity when South Korea is imposing sanctions on the North with the United States, the official added. Trump wrote in a tweet.

This photo, released by North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency on July 29, 2017, shows an intercontinental ballistic missile being launched on the night of July 28. Experts on the crisis repeated a call made by the Trump administration in recent months: China, North Korea's top trading partner and protector, must step in.
