UNSC approves new sanctions on North Korea

UN Security Council imposes tougher sanctions on North Korea for repeated missile tests

The draft resolution would ban North Korea's exports of coal، iron، iron ore، lead، lead ore and seafood. It would also prohibit countries from increasing the current numbers of Pyongyang's laborers working overseas, ban new joint ventures with the country and new investment in current joint ventures.

The United States negotiated with China for a month on the latest resolution, before expanding negotiations to the full 15-member council on Friday.

Tillerson's reluctance to sit down with his North Korean counterpart is despite his growing push for Pyongyang to return to the negotiating table with the U.S. Tillerson said this week that such talks would have to be predicated on the North giving up its nuclear weapons aspirations and that the conditions for such talks haven't yet been met by North Korea's government. He touted the "very big financial impact" of the sanctions and noted optimistically that both China and Russian Federation had joined in the unanimous vote.

A council diplomat، speaking on condition of anonymity، said there was a "high confidence" that North Korea ally China and Russian Federation would support the draft resolution، which was circulated to the 15 Security Council members on Friday.

Earlier this year tensions grew even further after Kim Jong-un accused the US and South Korea of carrying out military drills.

The Council reaffirmed previous Council decisions that North Korea not conduct further launches using ballistic missile technology, nuclear tests, or any other provocation.

China fears a spread of US influence in the region, though China and the USA agree on wanting to stop North Korea's nuclear development.

"We want to make sure China is continuing to implement fully the sanctions regime", Thornton told reporters in Manila.

Hours before their talks, the UNSC unanimously adopted Resolution 2371 in response to the ICBM tests.

North Korea on Sunday slammed the fresh sanctions imposed on it by the UN Security Council and threatened to turn the USA into an unimaginable sea of fire. The fresh sanctions could wipe as much as $1 billion off North Korea's annual export revenue. The committee can designate certain vessels and prohibit their worldwide port access, as well as ask Interpol to publish Special Notices on listed North Koreans banned from traveling.
