Netanyahu under investigation

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attends the weekly cabinet meeting at his office in Jerusalem, Israel, Sunday, Jan. 29, 2017.

In a document filed with a magistrate's court, the police on Thursday confirmed for the first time that Netanyahu is a suspect in two corruption cases which are under investigation, Xinhua news agency reported.

A former top aide to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will testify on behalf of state prosecutors in two graft cases in which the Israeli prime minister has been questioned as a suspect, a Justice Ministry source said on Friday. One, dubbed by the police as "Case 2000", involves secret talks he held with the owner of a large Israeli newspaper called Yediot Aharonot about reducing the competition in the news sector in return for more positive coverage.

The US-born Harrow has been under investigation for the past two years for fraud and other crimes regarding the sale of his consulting company while working as chief of staff.

Ari Harow served twice under Netanyahu before resigning in 2015 amid allegations he had improperly handled private business affairs.

Kara made the announcement at a press conference on Sunday, which Al Jazeera reporters were barred from attending. He said the broadcaster " will follow up the subject through appropriate legal and judicial procedures ".

If Harow gives evidence against his former boss, it would increase the chances of Netanyahu facing charges. His statement follows the description by the police of the offenses of which he is accused in the 1000 and 2000 cases: "The 1000 and 2000 cases concern bribery, fraud, and breach of trust". An indictment, which could still be months off, does not necessarily mean Netanyahu will step down, according to analysts and those familiar with Israeli law.

Police have been questioning Netanyahu for months over the cases, but have released few details.

For his part, Netanyahu has called the investigations as "background noise", vehemently denying any wrongdoing. Olmert was forced from power in 2008, leading to early elections in 2009, when Netanyahu was elected to the premiership.

But according to a recent poll by Israeli broadcaster Channel 10, Netanyahu's popularity might be dwindling.
