Darren Daulton, legendary Phillies baseball player, dies at 55

Darren Daulton, the catcher with the matinee idol looks and battered knees who became the on-field leader behind one of Philadelphia's most celebrated baseball summers in 1993, died Sunday at his home in Florida after battling brain tumor the past four years. Daulton had two brain tumors found in 2013, and though they were removed, he was diagnosed with glioblastoma, which has also claimed the lives of former Major League Baseball players Gary Carter, Tug McGraw, and Johnny Oates.

The three-time All-Star was the unofficial captain of the team that rallied from a last-place finish in 1992 to win 97 games in 1993, going practically wire-to-wire in the National League East before stunning the 103-win Atlanta Braves in the National League Championship Series.

"Darren was a true leader of men", Phillies chairman emeritus Bill Giles said in a statement. 'From the day that we drafted him until today, he constantly earned our respect and admiration as both a player and person'. "(He) was truly "one of a kind" and we will dearly miss him".

Daulton, a three-time All-Star who won the 1992 Silver Slugger Award, is best remembered for his 14 seasons with the Phillies, including his crucial role on the 1993 World Series team. The statement did not go into much detail, but stressed that Darren was "struggling" in his battle with glioblastoma, and that friends had been asking for prayers on social media. He revealed his warts, but he also treated everyone in the Phillies organization and fans with simple human decency and I really think that engagement gave him a bond that connected with the fans.

Mega Millions jackpot soars to $346 million, Powerball to $307 million
The $346 million jackpot is the game's highest since July 8, when a $540 million jackpot was won on a ticket sold in Indiana. The winning ticket from Wednesday night's drawing was sold at Pilot Travel Center on Route 173 in Hampton.

Daulton swigged champagne in the raucous Marlins clubhouse that night and he got his World Series ring.

The left-handed hitting Daulton batted.245 with 137 homers and 588 RBIs in 1,161 games. He is also the only Phillies catcher to record two 100 RBI seasons in team history. His teammates loved him, I loved him like he was one of my own.

Daulton, born on January 3, 1962, attended Arkansas City (Kansas) High School. In fact, he called me "Uncle Bill"'. Funeral services for Daulton will be private.
