Eight dead in Nigeria church gun attack

Gunman attacks southeast Nigeria church 8 killed

The attack took place during an early morning service at St. Philip's Catholic Church in Ozubulu, Anambra State.

While expressing his deep felt sympathy with the families of the victims, the Church leadership and the government of Anambra State, President Buhari has reassured all Nigerians of his administration's firm and uncompromising commitment to protect their lives and property at all times.

"The man, after shooting at his targeted victim, still went on a shooting spree, killing and wounding other worshippers", the police commissioner said.

A witness, who simply identified herself as a choir member, said the gunman left immediately into a waiting vehicle with a driver.

THISDAY gathered that about 47 persons were killed in the attack, with several others wounded and are already being attended to at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi.

The Police Commissioner had earlier confirmed eight people dead and 18 others injured in the attack. The gunmen were reportedly dressed in black and their faces were covered.

Garba linked the attack to a lone gunman who he said spoke local Igbo dialect.

"Such violent incidents dehumanise our society".

No individual or group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet, but such incidents are usually blamed on the Takfiri Boko Haram terrorist group, which is particularly active in the country's northeast region.

"Nobody has the right to kill innocent citizens".

He said the police had launched a manhunt on those behind the act and gave an assurance that everybody behind the act would be brought to justice. Anambra State governor must ensure that those who planned and executed this massacre in Ozubulu are arrested, prosecuted swiftly and decisively punished to serve as deterrent.

He wondered why brothers could visit such attack on their people and urged those involved to "sheathe their swords".
