Stephen Curry shoots 74 again at Ellie Mae Classic, misses cut

NBA champ Curry to test golf skills

Playing on a sponsor's exemption, Curry carded his second straight 4-over 74 Friday at the Ellie Mae Classic in Hayward, Calif., just down the road from his basketball home in Oakland.

Curry is tied for 146th place at TPC Stonebrae.

The tournament at the TPC Stonebrae north of San Francisco drew a larger than normal crowd with numerous fans following Curry wearing his Warriors jersey.

His worst hole was a double-bogey on No. 5, but then he birdied the par-3 No. 6. Brandon Harkins in one behind after a 65.

"If you told me I'd shoot a 74 going into my first round, I'd take that all day, everyday", Curry said, per the Tour.

Curry shot 74-74 and missed the cut at 8 over, generating a ton of positive buzz for the game, sparking fun debate and proving a lot of people wrong with his steady play.

Zach Johnson, a two-time major champion, said he has a friend who knows Curry and said he was a good player.

One of the highlights for Curry in the opening round was a long birdie putt and telling his caddie to "Go get that" from the cup.

"It could have been all those 80, 90 talks I heard going into the tournament".

Two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Curry is seeking to become the first athlete from another sport to make a cut on the tour. He did finish ahead of four players, including five-time Tour victor Matthew Goggin, and Colt McNealy, incoming Stanford freshman and younger brother of the No. 2-ranked amateur in the world, Maverick McNealy.

"Clearly, he is", Johnson said. That particular skill seemed to translate well on the golf course on Thursday. You've still got to put the ball in the hole. My dad has been paralyzed neck down since I was 10, and this was the 3rd golf tournament he has watched me play since his illness.
