Jonny Bairstow provides resistance despite quick fall of wickets

When your intensity is very high in preparation it leads you in to a Test very well- Broad

By the close of the second day, Anderson's figures of 4 for 33, his best in Tests at Old Trafford, allied to a brilliant display of ball-striking and strike-farming from Jonny Bairstow in the morning session, had pushed South Africa to the brink of surrender in the series.

Belief that Bairstow could actually get to three figures was sacked by two extraordinary shots that saw him move from 80 to 90 in the 106th over of the innings, bowled by Duanne Olivier.

Toby Roland-Jones (1-41) had earlier followed the example of his veteran colleague by removing dangerman Hashim Amla, who offered up a soft edge gratefully accepted by the gloves of Bairstow to depart for 30 soon after the resumption from lunch.

England are also facing a battle with South Africa to hold onto their prized bowling coach Otis Gibson before the Ashes begin.

Fortunately for the hosts, that came from a 52-run partnership between Root and Dawid Malan, but shortly before tea Malan (18) chased a wide delivery from Morne Morkel, flashing an edge to Faf du Plessis at second slip. Yet with only seven balls remaining, the England all-rounder was beaten for pace by Rabada as he delivered a devilish yorker to clatter Stoke's stumps and send him packing for 58 from 96 balls.

South Africa have not lost a Test series in England since 1998 and in their past 19 away Test series they have suffered just one campaign reverse - against India in 2015/16.

Vernon Philander has arrived in Manchester determined to help South Africa recover from their off-colour performance at The Oval.

Steven Finn has been retained in a 13-man England squad for this week's fourth Test against South Africa after the injured Mark Wood was ruled out of the Old Trafford match.

Barack Obama has 56 years : How Michelle has celebrated his birthday
Former President Bill Clinton wished fellow president Barack Obama a happy birthday on Twitter Friday afternoon. But for these Americans, the day they received a save-the-date response from Barack Obama may top the list.

Smith, the skipper of South Africa when Philander first broke into the national side, continued: "Sometimes you need to be a little bit harder on Vern".

The next ball he slogged down the ground for six, and two balls later, with Olivier trying to bowl wide of off-stump, Bairstow stepped across and hammered the ball to the point boundary.

After England thrashed South Africa by 239 runs in the 3rd Test to go 2-1 up in the series with one to play, here are five things we learnt from the match.

For Root, his 5000 test runs have come at a fabulous rate: 57 tests and 105 innings, putting him among some outstanding names.

Root would probably admit he was lucky to make as many as he did here, as Rabada gave him serious trouble during a fine spell from the renamed James Anderson End during the afternoon.

Jennings was out though when, getting only half forward to Duanne Olivier, he was caught behind by wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock, a former team-mate in the XI at Johannesburg´s King Edward VII school.

De Kock was the hero again when he produced a superb diving catch to claim the wicket of Westley for 29, off the bowling of Rabada, and at 92 for three, England needed a steadying influence.
