Census Shows a Changing Canada--and Mississauga

Of the largest non-official languages in Canada Tagalog is growing the fastest at a rate of 35 per cent since 2011. Statistics Canada released new data from its 2016 population census Wednesday

"The data provide a portrait of a country where diverse living arrangements have replaced the family models of the past", the agency said.

More than 1 million children, or 19.2 per cent, were living in a single-parent family in 2016, up from 17.8 per cent in 2001.

Just over 28 per cent of all households comprised a single person in 2016 - the highest share of one-person households since 1867, making it the most common living arrangement in Canada for the first time ever.

With 2017 marking Canada's 150 birthday, Statistics Canada is highlighting how Canadians' lives at home have evolved since Confederation.

Among the Atlantic provinces, Nova Scotia has the highest percentage of one-person households at 29.5 per cent, higher than the national average.

These changes are the results of demographic shifts, such as population aging and increasing ethnocultural diversity, as well as social, economic and legislative changes.

The census also identified growth in Indigenous languages beyond those raised with them. "It measured common-law unions for the first time in 1981, same-sex couples in 2001, and foster children and stepfamilies in 2011".

The proportion of women over the age of 65 who are living alone has fallen from 38.3 per cent in 2001 to 33 per cent previous year, while the ranks of those who were married or living common-law increased.

The most common type of household is now composed of a single person living alone.

Nanaimo resident Peter Golding is among the growing number of Canadians living alone.

Another Statistics Canada survey from 2011 showed that 69 per cent of people aged 20-24 had never left their parents' house.

This phenomenon is all the more important in Quebec, where 33.3% of residents live alone.

The percentage nation-wide of one-person households is now 28.2%, up from 25.7% in 2001. In 2016, almost 14 per cent of all Canadians over the age of 15 lived alone, compared with 1.8 per cent in 1951. Kids in Toronto have always been more likely to live at home than elsewhere in Canada. The couple has since had another child, and previous year all six moved to a house in the suburbs. The share of Canadians living by themselves has quadrupled since the mid-20th century, from just under two per cent of the total population in 1951 to 14 per cent in 2016.

"Nowadays, all the young people.they all know that if they want to, at one point, they can start a family". The number of overall English speakers was up from 2011, while the number of French speakers declined across Canada and in Quebec.

And the arrival of large numbers of immigrants from countries where grandparents, parents and children traditionally live in the same home made multigenerational households the fastest growing type of household between 2001 and 2016.

This is despite the fact that the national average of couples living without children has risen faster than the number of couples living with children. But, between 2006 and 2016, that increased by 60.7 per cent, compared with an increase of just 9.6 per cent for heterosexual unions.

An aging population also accounts for an increase in the number of empty-nesters, although more couples are choosing to forego parenthood.

Although there were slightly more male than female same-sex couples previous year, a slightly higher proportion of the female couples were married.
