Trump 'White Discrimination' Probe at Colleges Planned

The Justice Department's civil rights division has taken a step toward investigating and suing colleges based on admissions policies deemed discriminatory against white applicants, the New York Times reported Tuesday. The operation will not be run through the DOJ's Educational Opportunities Section, but rather by the division's front office which is composed of Trump political appointees.

The Justice Department declined to provide details.

The Supreme Court past year upheld a University of Texas program that considers race, among other factors, in admissions, offering a narrow victory for affirmative action.

But Blum tells Newsweek he's not a part of the Justice Department project described in New York Times and Washington Post reports this week. "The idea that discrimination against whites is such a significant problem that it demands Justice Department action is positively ludicrous". At the time of its introduction, the focus was on government contractors to "take affirmative action to ensure that applicants are employed, and employees are treated during employment, without regard to their race, creed, color, or national origin".

The Trump administration is continuing their dicey revamp of the nation's most poignant policies by seeking a task force to cover affirmative action policies disparaging white people.

The Supreme Court has said in multiple decisions that while racial quotas are unacceptable in college admissions, schools may use race as one of many factors that go into admissions decisions.

The announcement also suggests that the project will be based out of the department's civil rights division and not the educational department.

"This is deeply disturbing", she said. A 2012 Stanford University study found that while whites comprised 60 percent of the nation's graduating high school class in 2004, they accounted for almost three-quarters of admissions to the nation's most selective colleges. "It is frequently the case that not only are whites discriminated against now, but frequently Asian-Americans are as well".

Matthew Gaertner, an education expert at SRI International, a nonprofit research institute, said that of the 3,000 four-year nonprofit colleges and universities in America, 27 percent consider applicants' race and ethnicity during the admission process.

People For the American Way is a progressive advocacy organization founded to fight right-wing extremism and defend constitutional values including free expression, religious liberty, equal justice under the law, and the right to meaningfully participate in our democracy.

Affirmative action, as it exists in U.S. colleges and universities, aims to eliminate discrimination in the higher education admissions process by recruiting and incentivizing traditionally excluded groups like minority students or women.
