Trump plan would dramatically cut legal immigration

Trump Tries to Cut Legal Immigration by Half

In February, Perdue and Cotton introduced legislation to cut the number of legal immigrants into the United States by 50 percent over 10 years. The proposal got the backing of President Trump Wednesday in a joint press conference with the senators.

The legislation is sponsored by Republican Sens.

"This competitive application process will favour applicants who can speak English", he said, "financially support themselves and their families and demonstrate skills that will contribute to our economy".

Trump, Perdue and Cotton argued on Tuesday that low-skilled and unskilled immigration into the United States has depressed wages.

He launched his presidential campaign on the promise of building a wall along the US-Mexican border to halt illegal immigration and drug trafficking.

"Restricting immigration will only condemn us to chronically low rates of economic growth", said Bernard Baumohl, chief global economist at the Economic Outlook Group.

Pro-immigrant activists and other critics met Trump's announcement with rage, saying the bill is simply a way to favor rich immigrants while leaving out those with fewer resources.

India and China are locked in a massive standoff at the border in Sikkim, the longest between the two countries since the 1962 war.

"We allow far more family-based rather than skill- and employment-based immigration", he said.

"The RAISE Act ends chain migration and replaces our low-skilled system with a new points-based system".

Supporters, including the president, say the bill would spur the US economy and help American workers, but critics argue the bill would make the USA less competitive. This means they will preference the spouses and minor children of US citizens and legal permanent residents. Plans are to eliminate diversity lottery visas and limit the number of refugees offered permanent residency.

Cotton said the United States accepts over a million immigrants a year, the equivalent of adding the population of Montana every single year or Arkansas every three years.

Stephen Miller, Trump's top policy aide who has long advocated for changes to the immigration system and had a key hand in crafting this legislation, cast the measure as "the largest proposed reform to our immigration policy in half a century". In addition, the bill would also prevent new immigrants from collecting welfare. If nothing's getting passed this year, the next best thing is to remind your supporters who the enemy is to keep them motivated.

Mr Trump has long vowed to crack down on the USA immigration system. To help make immigration great again - to ensure immigration serves the American people and our national priorities - the RAISE Act would be a fine place to start. The administration says they are struggling to earn a middle-class wage because of the influx of cheaper foreign workers who depress wages.
