Congress lodges 44 Gujarat MLAs at Bengaluru resort

The BJP is pulling out all the stops to win all three Rajya Sabha seats in Gujarat for which elections will be held on August 8

BJP National President Amit Shah and Union Information & Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani are the two other candidates in the fray for four of the 11 Rajya Sabha seats from the state and for which poll is being held. The tally since Thursday is five.

After resigning from the House and also all party posts, they had driven to the BJP office in Gandhinagar and joined the saffron party in the presence of its president Amit Shah. Three MLAs, Balwantsinh Rajput, Tejashree Patel and PI Patel, quit on Thursday and joined the BJP, while three more submitted their resignations to Speaker Ramanlal Vora on Friday but did not join the BJP till evening.

The Congress has re-nominated Ahmed Patel, political secretary to party chief Sonia Gandhi, to the Upper House of Parliament from Gujarat.

Jolted by the exit of six of its lawmakers since Thursday, the party made a decision to shift 44 of its remaining 51 MLAs in the 182-set Gujarat Assembly to the city and prevent them from defecting to the BJP, the ruling party in the western state.

Theoretically, Beckham could hold out for a new deal, as Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald - who was selected one pick after Beckham in the 2014 draft - did on Friday .

"Mr. Rupani blames the Opposition party MLAs because his government has miserably failed to help the people stranded in floods, in which more than 100 people have died", he said, responding to a series of tweets in which Mr. Rupani criticisede Congress legislators for being away from their respective constituencies.

Last week Vaghela tendered his resignation as leader of the opposition in the Gujarat assembly. He, however, said that the question of joining BJP does not arise at this point.

The MLAs are now in a resort in Bidadi near Bengaluru. Stating that the party is keeping all options open, Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi warned the MLAs of serious consequences of the anti-defection law that can lead to disqualification from contesting elections up to six years. Congress leader Jagdish Thakor said the remaining Congress MLAs were also being flown out and that all would be present on the day of the Rajya Sabha elections. "Congress" original strength, before these resignations took shape, was 57. Gujarat's richest MLA, Balwantsinh Rajput, who was chief whip of the Congress legislative party, has already joined the BJP. None will be eligible to vote in the Rajya Sabha election on August 8. "So our legislators are being moved to safety", Arjun Modhvadia, senior Congress leader, said at Ahmedabad airport before leaving. "My vote, as I have said earlier too, is reserved for Ahmed bhai (Patel)", he added.

Ramsinh Parmar claimed that he did not quit the party keeping the Rajya Sabha polls in mind.
