Will Other Apple's iPhone Suppliers Follow Foxconn to the US?

Trump takes credit for Foxconn $10b US plant

Foxconn announced plans to build a new plant in Wisconsin worth around $10 billion.

Seven states had competed for the plant. Wisconsin said it will offer $3 billion in incentives, including tax benefits, to Hon Hai for building the Foxconn plant. Indiana, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas, Pennsylvania and NY were also in the running. "The bottom line is this company has a concerning track record of big announcements with little follow-through".

When President Trump announced the Foxconn deal, he promised it would create a minimum of 3,000 and up to 13,000 jobs over time.

In his speech, Trump made clear that he should receive the credit for the investment deal, saying "if I didn't get elected, he definitely would not be spending 10 billion dollars".

An estimated $5.7 billion of that amount will go toward construction and equipment from Wisconsin businesses, a spokeswoman for Walker said.

Although sources insist that NY state - which was offering up sites in Onedia and Genesee counties - was one of the finalists for the Foxconn factory, the company appears to have been focusing nearly exclusively on Rust Belt and other swing states won by Trump in the 2016 election.

The MOU commits Gou to creating 13,000 jobs over six years with an average salary of US$54,000.

The electronics manufacturer has signed a tentative agreement with Walker to build 20 million square feet of manufacturing facilities on about 1,000 acres in the southeastern area of the state.

Taiwan's Hon Hai Group (Foxconn) will invest 11 trillion won (US$10 billion) to build an LCD (liquid crystal display) production plant in Wisconsin, the US. It would mark a substantial gain for a state that now has 472,000 manufacturing jobs and is still recovering from factory layoffs - including the closure of a General Motors plant in Ryan's hometown - that hit after the 2008 financial crisis.

Foxconn is one of the world's largest contract manufacturers of electronics.

Critics have cautioned that Foxconn has made promises before to invest in the US and not followed through. The Republican-controlled Legislature is expected to consider them in a special session next month.

"Foxconn and subsequent other new companies that are looking at Wisconsin as a potential location, could very easily on the internet, they could basically pre-qualify the state for the type of suppliers that they need to fulfill their demand", says Murphy.

Foxconn executives approached the White House in the spring to talk about an array of policy issues and began meeting regularly with Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser, and Reed Cordish, a top technology and innovation adviser, according to a senior administration official who insisted on anonymity to discuss private talks.
