AMD boasts of Ryzen-backed growth, still makes a loss

Intel Core i9-7960X

The enthusiast world eagerly awaits the debut of AMD's Threadripper processors. They paired it against Intel's Core i3 CPUs as well as AMD's Ryzen 5 processors to see how how big the differences are.For more in-depth, technical breakdowns of Ryzen 3, check out Tom's Hardware and Anandtech's reviews. Zen-based processors are AMD's most competitive chips in a decade, and the sales of the initial Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 5 processors helped boost AMD's second-quarter earnings, which were reported yesterday. In comparison, both Ryzen 3 models have four physical CPU cores whereas when it comes to Core i3 CPUs they have two cores and a HyperThreading to simulate two more. (NASDAQ:AMD) impressive Q2 earnings announcement, shares of graphics chip competitor Nvidia Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) stock touched a new all-time high in morning trading Wednesday. While it's a little early to see how actual performance numbers work out, from a pricing standpoint, AMD looks to be continuing its aggressive push back against Intel's incumbency in the market.

The Ryzen 3 1200 boasts a clock speed of 3.1GHz and boost clock of 3.4GHz for the price of $110 or £104.99, while the Ryzen 3 1300X runs at 3.5GHz with a boost clock speed of 3.7GHz for $129.99 or £124.99. The chips are roughly comparable to Intel's Core i5-7400 and Core i5-7600, which have similar core counts and clock speeds.

Ryzen 3 takes this a step further by keeping to that 2+2 but then also reducing performance by deactivating the simultaneous threading (SMT) capability. Both have a low TDP of 65 watts. "We like the growth very much". Ryzen drove a 51% year-over-year revenue increase in AMD's core computing and graphics segment during the second quarter, enough to turn a small segment operating profit. And like all socket AM4 processors, Ryzen 3 is multiplier-unlocked to provide even more performance to users who appreciate the freedom to overclock.

Colin Kaepernick to Baltimore Ravens? Harbaugh won't rule it out
Harbaugh talked about interest in Kaepernick, but the signing of Olson likely means that Kaepernick won't be joining the Ravens. I wouldn't want that to be here, I don't want him to get another shot here, but yeah, he can come here and have some fun.

The four-core, four thread part is meant to compete against Intel's Core i3 and the Pentium G4560. Ryzen 3 will likely be faster when all cores are being stressed, but Intel is going to be quicker on light CPU loads. Intel also aims to launch its core i9 processors for PC enthusiasts, but Threadripper processor is comparatively cheap and may come out with liquid cooler out of the box.

Being even handed, one area where Intel wins out is with due consideration that Core i3 chips feature integrated graphics - Ryzen 3s, like their brethren, all need to be used with discrete GPUs, so bear this in mind when speccing up budget system builds.
