HTC Vive Standalone Headset Powered by Snapdragon 835 Announced

HTC Vive, Qualcomm Reveal Snapdragon 835-Powered Standalone VR HMD For The Chinese Market

The Vive Standalone headset will be powered by an Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor and will first be made available throughout China sometime before the end of the year.

Are Companies Trying To Make Cheaper VR Headsets?

The launch for HTC's Vive Standalone VR headset comes just weeks after rumours surfaced that Oculus is also working on a wire-free VR device that'll cost just $200 (around £155). All we know for now is that the headset will launch sometime later this year, in China, to begin with. HTC says the headset is created to deliver an "outstanding VR experience" with the manufacturer classifying the device as premium.

The headset looks exactly the same as a standalone version announced by HTC during the Google I/O developer conference in May for us audiences.

Gold rises to six-week high as dollar drops after Fed statement
The vote was unanimous among the Fed's Board of Governors and will keep the rate between 1 and 1.25 percent. The index touched a 1-year low of 93.86 on Friday and has depreciated by close to 8 percent this year.

The headset won't, however, be as capable as the HTC Vive, which requires being tethered to a high-end, $1000 PC to operate. It seems, though, that HTC is targeting only the Chinese market. As such, HTC partnered with Qualcomm to use its Snapdragon 835 processor and bring Qualcomm's Viveport store and content to China. By building up a rich library of VR experiences for the standalone VR market, Vive is solidifying its leadership position in the China ecosystem, and reaffirming the premium brand it has established in the VR market over the last two years.

It also allows VR headset makers to create VR experiences customized to their specific VR headsets, which means that headset makers such as Google and HTC can create their own VR platforms and offer these experiences to users.

China has explosive growth in both the mobile and VR markets, so HTC wants to capitalise on that.

HTC claims that the new Vive Standalone VR headset will deliver an "outstanding standalone VR experience" making it the "best-in-class premium device for this segment in the China market". Maybe it's not that different to the HTC Google Daydream with WorldSense tecnology announced in May, but without the Google support to avoid legal problems in the Chinese market.
