Google To Change Its Homepage For The First Time Since 1996

Why Google Is Radically Changing Its Homepage For The First Time Since 1996

The Google Feed will continue to show you the things it always has, including news, sports and weather, but it's more about news now - sort of a Facebook feed without the crappy "news stories" about miracle cures that mad uncle Bill keeps sharing with you.

Google rolled out a redesigned news feed infused with machine learning to create a more customized user experience. The mobile app feed also contains things such as boarding passes and calendar events based on things taken from Gmail and Google calendar. So don't get surprised even if a one-year old blog appears on your feed; that's because Google thinks that it might be of value to you.

Users will be able to choose to follow certain topics to customize their Google news feed.

The idea that Google would change the minimalist design of its homepage is a odd one.

Google has added a new feature to its homepage that's very similar to Facebook's news feed. Unlike Facebook, wherein a user's social feed is often biased based on the user's network, the Google feed eliminates the such narrowness and provides a slate of suggestions based on the user's tastes and actions.

Therefore, from now on, Google's feed will analyze your search history and dig up content of interest. You can also tap on a header to exit the feed and search as usual. However, it's worth mentioning that if you have a Pixel or any device that has Google Now/Feed built into the launcher, you won't see those tabs. The search giant first previewed the feed in December 2016, and it is now going to be an even more important part of the Google app.

Eliminating the "echo chamber" seems to be one of the functions of Google's new feed.

The company this week unveiled a new feed experience that will transform the look of its mobile app with the addition of cards, videos and news stories. Each stories will be provided with multiple options like dismissing it from your feed, or unfollowing the publisher or topic.

Google is known for its sparse homepage, which, though mostly white space, has, according to analytics firm Alexa Internet, become the world's most-visited website.

The company made a decision to bring its own news feed on the Google app, for users of both Android and iOS.
